Some of the richest connections are cultural rather than experimental. Ideas about electronic realities, received information, cosmic minds and quantum foundations circulated long before contemporary AI. These sources help trace that vocabulary while keeping fiction, personal interpretation and historical research distinct.

Philip K Dick and the problem of reality

Two Philip K Dick texts: a 1978 personal essay on manufactured realities, and a VALIS excerpt where information is alive, inside a novel.

Manufactured worlds and authentic people

Dick’s 1978 essay on electronic media building worlds of belief, set beside authentic personhood: a personal account, not a prediction about AI.

Dick’s 1978 essay sets manufactured realities beside authentic personhood. He discusses sophisticated electronic media constructing worlds of belief, then recounts apparent correspondences between his fiction, subsequent experiences and biblical narrative. It is his own philosophical and experiential account, not a quantum experiment or a prediction established about present AI.

The archival editorial note says the manuscript was probably never delivered. Treat it as an essay or speech manuscript, not a confirmed performed lecture.

VALIS · Information that is alive

The Tractates from Dick’s 1981 novel VALIS: a universe made of information and a living informational plasmate, strictly inside fiction.

The Tractates excerpt from VALIS describes a universe constituted as information, a living informational plasmate bonding with people, and spiritual rebirth. Other propositions portray objects and people as a language whose meaning has become unreadable, alongside a cosmic mind producing a healing subform. This is unusually concentrated source material for informational divinity, explicitly inside a novel’s metaphysical apparatus.

Literary source, not evidence that an alien AI exists. The excerpt was read; the full novel and Exegesis were not reviewed.

The historical meeting of physics and the counterculture

Two entries from David Kaiser’s history of Berkeley discussions, Esalen and unconventional patrons around entanglement and quantum foundations.

Kaiser · The Fundamental Fysiks Group

Kaiser’s history of Berkeley discussions that mixed entanglement and Bell’s theorem with countercultural and mind-reading interests; a social connection, not paranormal proof.

Kaiser’s author account describes Berkeley discussions of entanglement and Bell’s theorem alongside countercultural, New Age and mind-reading interests. His historical argument is that unconventional communities helped renew attention to foundations and contributed groundwork for quantum information science. That is a social and intellectual connection, not confirmation that their paranormal hopes worked.

Institutions, patrons and unconventional discussion

Kaiser’s account of Esalen as an alternative forum, and a route into why information, consciousness and extraordinary perception recur together.

Kaiser’s account identifies Esalen as an alternative forum and describes interests extending from intelligence-related patrons to human-potential entrepreneurs. It is a useful route into why information, consciousness and extraordinary perception recur together in these conversations. The author page does not establish telepathy, faster-than-light messaging or alien contact.
